The breed was developed by the nomads of Central Asia, who prized Akhal-Tekes for their speed and endurance. Akhal-Tekes were used extensively in warfare throughout history. By some accounts, Alexander the Great is said to have ridden an Akhal-Teke named Bucephalus. The breed was also used by the Mongols, the Turks, and the Persians.

- Mongolian horses are a relatively small but strong horse breed, which were key to the success of the 13th century Mongol Empire. The breed is reputed to remain largely the same today. There are currently over 3 million horses in Mongolia, more than the population of traditional Mongolian nomads who own them.

These are just a few of the many horse breeds that have had significant importance throughout human history. In warfare, the specific type of horse that was used depended on the needs of the army and the terrain on which it was fighting. However, all of the horses listed above share certain qualities that make them well-suited for transport, labor and warfare, such as strength, speed, agility, and courage.
